WA Tri Champs & Busso 1/2 marathon & Jetty Swim
Mandura Olympic Distance Triathlon
West Australian Championship (Open Cat)
(1500m Swim; 40Km bike; 10km Run)
This was race I geared my training around after slapping in a 5 week programme around work from xmas time. I was happy to see my good pool work pay off from UWA with a fast fast swim exiting in 3rd place with the open field spread wide open. I settled into a good rhythm & was soon into 2nd place after 2 or 3 k’s & began to chase down the current leader & eventual winner Eric.
Unfortunately on the first lap I lost concentration & mistook a marshall ‘s car directions for my own & lost a little time entering entering a wrong road, u-turning to get back on course. Back onto the course I still pushed through into the lead on the 3rd and final lap of the bike entering T1 in first position with Olympian rower Ben Curiton catching me in the later stages of the bike with Eric a further 30 sec back.
I had another trade mark slow transition with one of my orthotics being pushed to the front of the shoe & took shot to get on. I held onto 2nd spot as Eric sprinted by early on until 4ks as Macca passed me also (last years winner) . I hoped to hold onto a podium placing but as I wilted in the heat I lost another 2 places in the closing km of the race which was a little disappointing but was a toasty 37
Last weekend I drove up to Bussleton (The Ironman & 70.3 town of WA). I made the weekend a solid training weekend & entered the 1/2 Marathon on the Saturday morning & the Bussleton Jetty Swim on the Sunday before riding a 160k point to point ride – Bussleton to Mandurah.
I wasn’t sure how I’d go on the 1/2 as my running has been capped at 2 or 3 sessions/week between 40 min-hr in duration.
I hurt from start to finish but I felt pretty content being within a min of my 1/2 marathon PB but I wrecking myself the rest of the day & wasn’t sure how I’d go the Busso Jetty swim the day after.
I felt so stiff I was sure my feet would drag along the sea bed.
I had a good massage & stretch session afterwards & Sunday morning I felt a little fatigued & there was a bit of a swell in the ocean too. Last years conditions were near perfect calm in fact 5 min difference ewas noted difference Olympic swim Champion Travis Nederpelt winning 2012’s event in 40 min flat & this year in 45…
I stayed mostly out out of trouble and was at the front end of the action until field was spread wide open before the turn around. On the return leg & I got swallowed up by the first main pack & things didn’t really settle down with lots of argy bargy until 500m to go the speed ramped right up to above threshold, I held onto second spot in that group which I was I pleased with & placed 8th overall winning my category also.
